On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Mario Giacomelli, a master of 20th-century photography, the Gentile da Fabriano National Prize and the Gentile Prize Association present the exhibition "Passaggi. Mario Giacomelli and Simone Massi" at Zona Conce in Fabriano, from June 21st to October 19th, 2025. Curated by Gianluigi Colin and Galliano Crinella, the exhibition offers a unique comparison between the renowned photographer and Simone Massi - illustrator, author, director, and master of animation - both from the Marche region. Two languages, chronologically distant yet deeply connected in their depiction of reality, revealing elective affinities.
The exhibition, made possible thanks to the contribution of Diatech Pharmacogenetics and organized in collaboration with the Mario Giacomelli Archive, Carifac’Arte, and Zona Conce, under the patronage of the Regional Council of Marche and the Municipality of Fabriano UNESCO Creative City, will be the only exhibition in the Marche region during the summer and part of the autumn to celebrate Mario Giacomelli - an artist born in Marche, whose work consistently told the story of the region and its roots.
The exhibition seeks to represent Giacomelli's work beyond the landscape, through a dialogue with the illustrations by Simone Massi.
Mario Giacomelli (Senigallia, 1925 – Senigallia, 2000), who was awarded the Gentile da Fabriano National Prize in its first edition in 1997 by Senator Prof. Carlo Bo, is a photographer known and celebrated internationally.
Simone Massi (Pergola, 1970), an artist working in cinema, is today considered one of the leading authors of animated short films in Italy and worldwide. He is the recipient of a "David di Donatello", four "Nastri d’Argento", and an "Ennio Flaiano" Prize, and the creator of the opening sequence for three editions of the Venice International Film Festival.
On display are 35 photographs from Mario Giacomelli's most iconic series such as “Stories of the Land,” the seminarians of “I Have No Hands to Caress My Face,” “The Good Earth,” as well as “Scanno” and “Lourdes.” Alongside them are an equal number of pencil and pastel drawings by Simone Massi, who portrays the same land, faces, and passions with a technique that resembles scratching or engraving.
